Comex and the iPhone Dev Team have just released a userland jailbreak for ALL Apple iOS Devices (all model iphone, ipod touches and iPads) with firmwares 3.1.2-4.0.1 (current version).
To jailbreak simply visit http://jailbreakme.com on your Apple device with Mobile Safari and follow the easy instructions. Jailbreaking takes just minutes.
iTunes is NOT used for this jailbreak! Everything is done in Mobile Safari @ jailbreakme.com.
Ultrasnow carrier unlock is expected later this week.
UPDATE: MMS and FaceTime Jailbreak issues have been fixed via Cydia update, ipad issues seem to have been fixed and carrier unlock is due in the next 48 hours.
This method has been tested and works with iPhone OS 1.14 thru 3.1.3 and on all iPhone models (2G, 3G, 3GS) not tested on iPod Touch, but should work.
HAS NOT BEEN TESTED ON ITUNES 9.2 OR Apple IOS4 (CURRENT VERSIONS)
**WARNING– Unlockers WILL LOSE carrier unlock with this method if they update to 3.1.3 or 4.0 in iTunes!**
*Try the following procedure at your own risk, you WILL lose all your data (music, photos, high scores, etc.. ) with this method but will have a working phone again. You just need to re-sync with iTunes to get your apps, songs, movies, etc.. back after your phone is fixed*

I’ve found from much trial and error that having too many iPhone “official” 3rd Apple App store apps installed when you try to jailbreak the phone may sometimes cause the phone to hang up in a state of constant reboot.
Although I can’t and don’t guarantee this will work 100% of the time, if you’ve tried to jailbreak your iPhone and your phone gets stuck at the Apple Logo and reboots every 5-10 minutes, you need to follow these steps:
Setting the iPhone to recovery mode allows you to perform firmware restore using iTunes.
1) Power off the iPhone by depressing both the sleep/wake button on the top of the iPhone and the home button. Wait for the iPhone screen to turn black aka screen-off.
2) Depress the home button and connect the iPhone/iPod sync cable into the docking port on the bottom of the iPhone at the sametime without removing pressure on the home button.
3) You should be able to see the Apple logo coming up on the iPhone and then the recovery screen with be shown after the Apple logo:
4) iTunes will start and inform you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and you should restore your iPhone to start using it.
5) Perform your firmware restore.
6) Exit iTunes and Re-jailbreak. I highly recommend using Spirit jailbreak but you can use, Pwnage Tool or BlackRa1n (or whatever jailbreak tool that will work on your model iPhone). Run the jailbreak app again and everything should go fine. Spirit takes about 3 minutes to jailbreak a 3GS and about 5 minutes to complete an older model.
7) Don’t restore from a backup, just set up your phone as a new phone, then re-sync to add back all your data and apps.
DONE!
ONCE AGAIN, **Unlockers WILL LOSE carrier unlock with this method if they update to 3.1.3 or 4.0 in iTunes and I can’t guarantee this will work 100% of the time, also I am not responsible for any lost data or a bricked phone or anything other problems encountered from trying this method. Try at your own risk, leave a comment and I’ll try to help out with any issues.
New untethered jailbeak for latest iphone, ipod touch and ipad is OUT!! Go to http://spiritjb.com/ for mac and windows downloads. Works with iPhone, iPhone 3g, and iPhone 3gs, all iPod touch models and even the iPad!
Windows 7/Vista users, run in win98 compatibility mode or jailbreak will exit with an error!
As always when a new firmware is being realeased, there is always a few unlucky people who “accidentally” update or restore to the latest firmware, thus losing their jailbreak and unlock.
In this case, you’d usually want to downgrade your iPhone from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 simply by downloading 3.1.2 and SHIFT + Restore in iTunes so that you can choose your own firmware to restore to.
The problem is that Apple recently stopped signing all previous firmware versions making it impossible for you to downgrade.
Here’s some links with information on jailbreaking using Pwnage tool 3.1.4 for Mac (only) and UltraSn0w unlock, which helps you to Jailbreak your iphone with Firmware 3.1.2.
Please be aware that this is a two step process– after you Jailbreak you will have to unlock the iphone to use it any GSM cellular carrier.
Pwnage tools for iPhone OS 3.0 are out now!! –>For Mac OSX only that is (for now).
From the iPhone Dev Team:
This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.0 firmware from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of some bugs and unexpected changes this will be a multipart release, starting with the release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X. QuickPwn for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime soon, please don’t bug us about it, we are working flat out to get everything finished to release them.
**UPDATE** This information only applies to iPhone OS 2.2.1 and earlier. Redsn0w used for jailbreaking OS 3.0 REQUIRES iTunes 8.2 or higher.
Apple has released iTunes 8.2 in Software Update, to support the upcoming iPhone 3.0 firmware. iTunes 8.2 is not supported current versions of QuickPWN and Pwnage tool. This means you can’t jailbreak an iPhone with iTunes 8.2 so we will need to wait Newer versions of QuickPWN and Pwnage tool.
If you’ve accidenally installed 8.2 and need to uninstall it on a Mac, you can follow Apple Support’s article or try the following:
Type the following commands in terminal and make sure that
You can try this method to fix a iPhone stuck at the boot logo. You won’t have to restore your phone and loose your saved games scores and other data. It might work providing you are able to get SSH access, which isn’t always possible.
Turn ipod or iphone off
connect Sync cable
turn on ipod iphone
listen for USB device “chime” (Window) or wait about 15 seconds on a Mac
ssh to your iPhone
navigate to /var/mobile/
rename Applications folder to Applications2
wait 5 second and your springboard will pop up
now rename Applications back and restart
I haven’t tested this method, but its worth a try.
This is the best explanation I could find for why some iPhones get stuck in an endless reboot. (I could be incorrect on some of these points)
Here’s the problem – Springboard is watched by a watchdog process. The watchdog process monitors Springboard, and if it doesn’t respond at least once every couple of minutes or so, it is killed and forcibly restarted. If this happens approximately 4 times, the watchdog will reboot the device. I’m pretty sure this is to ensure that a hung /unresponsive Springboard.app will reboot–> fixing itself instead of freezing the touchscreen until a force reboot is manually performed.
When installing an application the Springboard generates an Application Map with the location of the various icons and their screen location. Apparently, after Quickpwn is finished and the iPhone reboots, the Application Map must be completely rebuilt. So, of course, the more Apps you have installed, the longer it takes to rebuild the Map.
Therefore, if you have a sufficiently large number of installed Applications that causes a regeneration of the Application Map to take longer than 2 minutes then it becomes impossible for Springboard to complete the task before it is force quit by the watchdog. The phone will be rebooted by the watchdog process after several minutes, run out of time and reboot the device indefinitely.
