FIX iPhone OS 3.0-3.1.3 Stuck in Constant Reboot After Jailbreak.

Posted on 2010 under Help, Jailbreaking, News, Tweaks | 308 Comments

iphone stuck at logo with endless reboot

This method has been tested and works with iPhone OS 1.14 thru 3.1.3  and on all iPhone models (2G, 3G, 3GS) not tested on iPod Touch, but should work.

HAS NOT BEEN TESTED ON ITUNES 9.2 OR  Apple IOS4 (CURRENT VERSIONS)

**WARNING– Unlockers WILL LOSE carrier unlock with this method if they update to 3.1.3 or 4.0 in iTunes!**

*Try the following procedure at your own risk, you WILL lose all your data (music, photos, high scores, etc.. ) with this method but will have a working phone again. You just need to re-sync with iTunes to get your apps, songs, movies, etc.. back after your phone is fixed*

**Unlockers WILL LOSE carrier unlock with this method if they update to 3.1.3 or 4.0 in iTunes!**

I’ve found from much trial and error that having too many iPhone “official” 3rd Apple App store apps installed when you try to jailbreak the phone may sometimes cause the phone to hang up in a state of constant reboot.

Your Ad Here

Although I can’t and don’t guarantee this will work 100% of the time, if you’ve tried to jailbreak your iPhone and your phone gets stuck at the Apple Logo and reboots every 5-10 minutes, you need to follow these steps:

Setting the iPhone to recovery mode allows you to perform firmware restore using iTunes.

1) Power off the iPhone by depressing both the sleep/wake button on the top of the iPhone and the home button. Wait for the iPhone screen to turn black aka screen-off.

2) Depress the home button and connect the iPhone/iPod sync cable into the docking port on the bottom of the iPhone at the sametime without removing pressure on the home button.

3) You should be able to see the Apple logo coming up on the iPhone and then the recovery screen with be shown after the Apple logo:

4) iTunes will start and inform you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and you should restore your iPhone to start using it.

5) Perform your firmware restore.

6) Exit iTunes and Re-jailbreak. I highly recommend using Spirit jailbreak but you can use, Pwnage Tool or BlackRa1n (or whatever jailbreak tool that will work on your model iPhone). Run the jailbreak app again and everything should go fine. Spirit takes about 3 minutes to jailbreak a 3GS and about 5 minutes to complete an older model.

7) Don’t restore from a backup, just set up your phone as a new phone, then re-sync to add back all your data and apps.

8) DONE!

ONCE AGAIN, **Unlockers WILL LOSE carrier unlock with this method if they update to 3.1.3 or 4.0 in iTunes and I can’t guarantee this will work 100% of the time, also I am not responsible for any lost data or a bricked phone or anything other problems encountered from trying this method.  Try at your own risk, leave a comment and I’ll try to help out with any issues.

Hi, my recovery mode picture seems to be showing a cartoon steve jobs saying in russian the word “NPEBEA” and I’m very worried now. Is it normal? I’m downloading the restore file now because my itunes still detects it as in recovery mode even thought it does not show the picture that you showed above. FINGERS CROSSED for my restoring! I’m scared.

  9. by DLJF, on April 7 2009 @ 2:55 PM

Okay, I’ve confirmed that the Steve Jobs cartoon is jus a recovery mode picture. Thank you! This solution is the best I’ve found online! :D

ive tried this but it takes like four hours downloading the new software and when its finally downloaded it gives me a message telling me that it took to long and an error ocurred ,,, what can i do?

  12. by Admin, on May 5 2009 @ 2:37 AM

    I’ll assume you’re using Windows.

Try manually downloading the restore .ipw file instead of thru itunes.

Pick the correct firmware from this site..

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/02/09/apple-iphone-and-ipod-touch-firmware-update-221-direct-download-links/

Direct download links are in about the middle of the page.

In order to upgrade your iPhone with direct downloaded software, plug in iPhone to PC, and then press and hold “Shift” button on your PCs keyboard (Option Key on Mac) while clicking on the update button in the iTunes interface.

A Windows Explorer window will pop up to let you browser to the firmware to upload to portable device.

    It should then install fine.

    Good Luck

You’re using a genuine ATT SIM? If so, it may take a couple of hours for the SIM to re-activate sometimes. If it doesn’t do it on its own, just take it out, shut off the phone, insert sim and then restart phone. Connect to itunes and it should activate.

    2. did as per your instructions and the whole process took only 30 minutes…this included restoring my phone back to its original state, and auto re-installing of all the apps that were originally there
    3. i did not see steve jobs, so that must be a sighting for some!
    4. note that when i did connect my fone, it did not open itunes. I opened itunes myself and got the restoration process going
    5. i decided to then remove all the apps, and all passwords in my iphone before i went for a 2nd jailbreak attempt
6.Voila–in 5 minutes, it all fine and jailbroken!

I guess I can say that I jumped the gun and now I’m in somewhat of a predicament.
My jailbroken iPhone wouldn’t show up in itunes, and without thinking there was a fix I went to the Settings “app” and clicked on erase all data/restore etc. I waited the hour or so while it did it’s thing and then sadly once it finally started to reboot it was rebooting with that stupid pineapple logo.
It got stuck in the constant reboot, but not with the apple logo.
I followed your steps and I never got the USB>iPhone icon on my screen, but I did get the Cartoon Steve.
I downloaded firmware 2.2.1 and option>restored my phone, but that eventually got me nowhere except an error 1611 and the Pineapple logo/steve cartoon again.

I’ve retried many times. I’m wondering if theres a download for firmware 2.2.2 somewhere and if that would help? I’m kind of freaking out right now and I’m hoping someone will be able to give some guidance…

  25. by Admin, on May 28 2009 @ 1:11 PM

You’re not getting the Apple Logo/connect to iTunes screen, because you have replaced your boot icons. Are you using Windows or Mac to sync?

Firmware 2.2.1 is the latest available.

“I’m wondering if theres a download for firmware 2.2.2 somewhere”

It should restore with 2.2.1 tho, so reboot your computer after you remove all other USB devices you may have attached and try to restore again.

  26. by Drew, on May 28 2009 @ 5:56 PM

I am using a Mac. I removed all other USB devices, restarted, and tried a restore again but I got the same thing as the last time. “Preparing to Restore iPhone” for about five minutes until it gives me the error.

    Not stoked right now =/

U need to restore the phone using a Windows pc or a powered USB hub.

Thanks, I’ll try that and get back to you

  29. by Drew, on May 29 2009 @ 12:45 AM

I got my phone working after hooking it to a windows PC and restoring it. Once I got home it was yet again undetectable to my Mac iTunes, and so I restored again, now I’m just getting the USB to iTunes icon on my phone. I can’t even use my phone anymore.

  30. by Admin, on May 29 2009 @ 1:00 AM

How did you restore it if your mac couldn’t detect it–thru the settings app on the phone? Sounds like you need to try a different usb sync cable or port on your mac.

  31. by Admin, on May 29 2009 @ 1:04 AM

Also, make sure you are running OSX 10.5.7, the usb drivers in 10.5.6 were crap.

  35. by Admin, on June 9 2009 @ 3:00 PM

Sounds like you tried to Jailbreak with iTunes 8.2? You may need to downgrade to 8.2 or find a friend with a Windows PC or Mac with 8.1. See this for uninstall help: http://iphonedownlow.com/?p=96 Don’t know if iTunes 8.1 is available for Mac anymore, but you can get v7.7 directly from Apple downloads ( http://www.apple.com/search/downloads/?q=itunes+7.7 ) that will maybe get you going–don’t know if it will work tho..

  36. by haldawinge, on June 9 2009 @ 4:20 PM

hey there!! thanks! i think u are right..it was the itunes 8.2 problem. anyway i managed to restored it to factory settings and then backed up my files. I guess i won’t jailbreak for the moment until after i update to OS 3.0. Let me know then if after upgrading to 3.0 i can still jailbreak. the only thing that i found good about jailbreaking was the use of cycorder. i understand that with the new operating system, there is video capabilities.
    cheers Admin!

okay I give up!!!! I just got an unlocked jailbroken 2g 8g Iphone 2 days ago, and did an upgrade and my icons started disappearing even after a reboot so I called myself trying to start back at factory settings to do the entire jailbreak/unlock again but my phone is stuck where it says Itunes at the top and then there is an arrow with the small end of the white cord going toward it. It is not being recognized in my computer ports at all unless i play with them and hold them certain ways and when I do actually get it to restore I get an error 2005. So currently my phone is stuck and I have done the whole hold the home button and power button thing over and over and the result I get from that is my phone being in Emergency mode. Someone please give me step by step directions to help me please and I have all the jailbreaking software but it isnt working becaause when i get to step 2 it isnt recognizing the firmware

i’m having a lot of trouble. i’ll describe my exact issue.
last night, i was on my iphone (facebook to be exact) and all of a sudden, it said searching…
and i thought that was weird so i restarted my iphone (not reset) when i turned it back on, it said “iphone cannot make or recieve calls. please restore from itunes” then when i plug it into itunes, it tells me it cant activate my phone because the sim isn’t detected. so of course then i put it into DFU mode and tried restoring, it tells me that an unkown error occured during restore. i got a new sim card. didn’t work. tried manually downloading another ipsw file and shift+restoring with it. didn’t work. and i don’t know what the hell to do. i really need some help with this. please contact me as soon as possible. my home phone number is ***********. i know it’s gutsy puttin my phone number on here but i have no choice. btw my iphone is jailbroken 3.0 OS using redsn0w. ive never had any other problems.

Hey…you use installous for 3rd part apps right? I did and I think this happens after installing to many apps too. I installed like 7 at once, all games, and once I turned the phone off this started happening….

Unfortunately, I didn’t turn “itunes sync” ON in installous so I’m going to have to install all the 3rd part apps again..what a pain >.<

Do I HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO restore or is there another way? Thx dude!

  49. by casey, on July 17 2009 @ 10:21 PM

Forgot to add, will this happen every time now? What is the proper way to install 3rd part apps? Delete all apps from itunes and then install 3rd part apps or what? Thx dude!

  50. by Admin, on July 17 2009 @ 11:19 PM

I would not ever recommend installing pirated apps via installous or applo.us. These apps have been modified by anonymous persons and it is no telling what has been done to the code. Since jailbreaking gives you full file system access it is possible malware/spyware could infect your phone.

I would wipe the phone with a full restore and re-jailbreak to clean any trace of these cracked apps off.

hey whats up man, i jailbroke my iphone 2g perfectly fine, unlocked it, got it to work with tmobile. its when i synced it with itunes to restore my music and such files, i clicked “gabes phone” instead of new phone, so it syncs everything, says to disconnect, but the phone gets stuck on the screen with the apple logo, with the filler bar across the middle, with only about a 1/10 full and doesnt move. im redoing the whole jailbreak as we speak, should i click to sync as a new phone this time to solve this or what? im using a mac btw with the new version of itunes.

  60. by Admin, on August 2 2009 @ 3:50 AM

yep, just sync as a new phone and resync your data, apps, music, etc.. Restoring from an old backup screws up the jailbreak most of the time. There are some people say there’s no problem restoring from an old backup–but its never worked for me.

Ok guys, I upgraded to 3.0.1 firmware and lost jailbreak capability. I downgraded with redsn0w, installed cydia, installed repo666.ultrasn0w.com, and now every time I install any package my device goes into that endless loop of death. The only way to recover is to do an itunes recovery and back to square one. How do you stop that endless loop of death to stop recurring after jail break, i even tried recovering it and starting it as a brand new phone. I think 3.0.1 does something to the device that effs it all up. Anyone out there expeirence this same thing too?

  64. by Admin, on August 15 2009 @ 8:26 PM

can you install packages thru cydia without ultrasnow being installed?

  65. by Admin, on August 15 2009 @ 8:28 PM

The phone will automatically back itself up whenever it is connected to iTunes. You should be able to restore it from a back up and it will work. but if you rejailbreak just sync the phone to get your data back, don’t restore from a backup.

  66. by carlos, on August 16 2009 @ 7:17 PM

mine is still doing the same thing as before please help me

  67. by xiamhlwb, on August 16 2009 @ 7:17 PM

The iphone is setup as a new phone for the moment but whenever cydia installs a new program for example winterboard, and have to do a restart the phone goes into that reboot mode and just keeps rebooting. It never totally reboots to springboard. Am I the only one who is getting this issue?

I have 3GS upgraded to 3.0.1 firmware, used redsn0w and old 3.0.0 firmware to jailbreak, loaded ultrasn0w with cydia, cydia installs winterboard or other program, iphone restarts and unable to get back to springboard and in that endless reboot loop of death mode. Only way to recover is to perform reset and reload firmware.

Please respond if you are having the same problem and you solved it by some special hack.

  68. by Admin, on August 16 2009 @ 8:40 PM

Haven’t run into this problem before. All I can recommend is to re-jailbreak and try icy instead of cydia and see if it works.

  69. by carlos, on August 17 2009 @ 2:12 AM

does the restart erease everything cause i have important pictures onthere that ill never get back

  70. by Admin, on August 17 2009 @ 2:24 AM

Yes, restoring the phone as described in the article above will completely erase all your data but will bring the phone back to working condition. The only way to (maybe) save your photos and data is by trying the ssh reboot fix here. However, I haven’t personally tried this method, don’t know if it will work at all, and cannot be of much assistance if you try it. “too many iPhone 3rd apps” — what the hell you mean by that? 3rd party apps from the App Store, or 3rd party apps from Cydia?

Iguess my iphone was in bad shape because I had to do this a few time before it would work. I was deep in panic mode though, when it FINALLY did what is instructed above. Thanks so much for the wonderful info! And to those that it isn’t working for, do it over and over until your fingers hurt!!!

Hello, since jailbreaking my iphone 3g, I was experiencing the “Constant reboot issue” I’ve attempted to try restore it back to factory settings but always get either an “Error 1604 or 1602″ message. I’ve tried everything including attempting to restore it using an older Firmware version “iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw”. I have upgraded my Itunes to version 9 because I got worried and tried to follow the instructions from Apple’s site, it automatically takes you there after clicking ok in the error message box.
Finally found this page and folowwed the instructions exactly, still got the “Error 1604″ dialog.
    Please, Please HELP !!!
I can be emailed directly at siguenzarlb@aol.com.

    Much appreciated!!!!!

    Hi, this is the situation.

    my phone is a 3gs using 3.07

this happened on 9/11/2009, after the 3.1 release…
my phone drained my credit, so i went to reset network settings hoping to fix it.
It rebooted, and is now stuck in a reboot loop…
I tried all the methods described before except one catch.

Iphone 3gs, cant be restored with <3.1 any longer, it says it is not eligible for the build.
So im stuck not able to upgrade to avoid the baseboard stuff… and yet cant restore below to my original 3.07 firmware….

Oh and the funny thing is itunes reads the phone and can sync and such, but the phone it self is stuck in boot… and it reboots every 4 minutes or so…

    any suggestions … thank you.

I upgraded from 2.2 to 3.0 using redsn0w. Since doing so I get a cartoon steve jobs saying in russian the word “NPEBEA” every time i boot.

I can’t even restore my iphone as it won’t show up in itunes now!!

    What can I do?

  85. by Admin, on October 21 2009 @ 12:29 PM

Crap, you needed to update to the official 3.0 thru iTunes first, then run redsn0w to jailbreak 3.0. You need to reinstall 2.2, this link may help: http://bcclist.com/2009/01/29/downgraded-heres-how/

    Good Luck!

After that constant rebooting of pineapple logo and steve jobs appearing on my screen. And one thing is that my iphonecannot be detected by itunes even i enter it to dfu mode.

    Help is badly needed.

    Hi,
My usb port doesn’t detect my phone. I got an error instead. No possibility to make it working even on other pc and laptops also with new cable. So I decided to install terminal to check the system manually. but installation failed and after reboot. all standard application was gone ??? Phone Apple store etc…
And I could’nt connect via USB. WIFI is working and call are comming in except that I couldn’t give call on my side ?! Some ideas ? Is my phone definitivly dead ?
    thanks

Those 1600 errors are a pain! The instructions at apple.com are pretty useless. If you cannot downgrade the iphone OS back to 2.2.1. You need to try to restore it using a genuine 3.1.2 ipsw.

No guarantees here, but I’ve brought some dead iphones like yours back to life by using Quickpwn 2.2.5 for Windows just for putting the phone into restore mode.

Shut down iTunes, then fire up Quickpwn then connect your dead phone, after a short while Quickpwn might just recognize the phone and put it into restore mode(!) When (if) it does, shut quickpwn down and restore to factory settings with iTunes instead using the latest firmware. This technique does not work with Quickpwn for Mac. This might just get you back going.

Many thanks to you for your help and feedbacks!
My iphone is back life !! Great ! I tryed this way:
Unloading completly the battery (waiting & playing). Through that I got a reboot automatic every second (very strange). At the end with no power at all (bipppppppp dead heart). I decided to reload with power supply let’s say until 90 to 100%.
And tryed to reconnect on a new laptop usb port. And it was recognised ?? Strange I tryed it plenty time before but without this exact maner. I decided to patch the Phone to 3.1.2 normal way. And finally restaure. All are OK now. Except that it seems to get some probleme during synchronisation from time to time like usb port disconnected ? But it could be my old laptop. Will check and let you know ;-)
Bye and have fun with your iPhones ;o)

    Hello everyone,
I have an Iphone 3g with 2.2.1 with the nPEBEA recovery error on it. I have used the directions on this post to select the 2.2.1 file by holding down shift and it seemed to upload and the progress bar on the phone went to 100%. It has now been sitting there for 20 minutes and itunes still says restoring iphone software. will it get farther?
    Thanks

I have a 3Gs, latest OS. Jailbroke 2 days ago, has been great until I tried to install some lock screen widget from Cydia last night. I had a lot of themes loaded, and such, maybe I pushed it?
Anyhow, stuck in constant reboot, apple logo. I was running iSatin (icon replacement), and never saw the itunes/recovery mode screen. Although finally, I did get a little funny drawing with some 0000F errors, and it safe safe mode I think.
It did a sync with iTunes, then a popup saying it is in recovery mode, OK, or reboot. I rebooted, and was back to stuck reboot.
    Can anyone PLEASE help???
    Thank you so much!

  125. by samuel Rader, on February 8 2010 @ 6:48 PM

Step 2 does not make sense to me. You said, Depress the home button and connect the iPhone/iPod sync cable into the docking port on the bottom of the iPhone at the sametime without removing the home button. Do I depress the home button or plug it in without removing the home button. How do you remove the home button in the first place. This step does not make sense.

Create a custom IPSW 3.1.2 Firmware with Pwnage Tool, then hold the option key while clicking the restore button in iTunes. Browse to your custom IPSW and restore your phone with it.

  132. by Admin, on February 14 2010 @ 4:04 PM

Since your phone was previously jailbroken, you can try this: Create a custom IPSW 3.1.2 Firmware with Pwnage Tool, then hold the option key on your keyboard while clicking the restore button in iTunes, this will bring up a file browser. Browse to your custom IPSW and try to restore your phone with it.

  133. by Admin, on February 14 2010 @ 4:05 PM

Also, if you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), you don’t need to mess around with DFU mode at all. Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes. Don’t enter DFU mode at all.

    Request for help

I’m not sure if my problem is the same as above; but i can’t understand the reference to “running Quickpwn again”. Where does it explain when, how to use it the first time. I tried to google it but can’t figure out if it’s relevant to me. I don’t want to perhaps make (more) mistakes.

I hope someone can help me. I fear i don’t know enough of important details to get right advice. But here goes.

I have an iPhone that was jailbroken and unlocked and worked happily for ages, then for no apparent reason the other day went to the apple icon. It seemed to be automatically infinitely re-booting. Apple store people suggested holding down Home button before connecting to iTunes, this allowed me to restore it (i think). It gives me a “this SIM card appears to not be supported message”. I assume this is because i am overseas and why some friendly Apple technician unlocked it for me a year back.

A month ago i used Blackrain following and i think i upgraded to 3.1.2 so i could get access to newer features. it all went well until this hiccup. Unfortunately i don’t know what iPhone i have (3G? – i bought it end of 2008) and i don’t know for sure what firmware i have (think i upgraded to 3.1.2 in Jan). How do i find out?

I tried to use Blackrain but when the window says “it will now reboot” it simply has the usb cable/iTunes graphic.

If i figure out how to us Quickpwn as referenced above will this help me, is my problem related to your advice above?

I am LOST, if you are able to help i will be enormously grateful.

  137. by Admin, on February 20 2010 @ 10:21 PM

In your case, you’d run blackrain again to re-jailbreak.

  138. by Andy, on February 21 2010 @ 8:09 AM

Thanks, but sadly when i try blackrain it doesn’t finish the process; or perhaps it does but my iPhone doesn’t reboot.

My computer gives me a message saying something like “you jailbreak has been successful…and your iPhone will now reboot..and a final window will pop up confirming” but the reboot never finishes, and the usb cord/iTunes icon remains on my homescreen. I have tried several times. I imagine it is a problem that with the right knowledge (like the type of suggestions above) i could fix but…

My problem is that the apple logo stays on then I follow the instruction you gave me but unfortunately it ask me to restore and update and I dont wanna do that…all I wanna do is restore and get all of stuffs back in one piece, itunes did not provided me with option of choosing restore from my back up,what else can be done. I’m in Africa and there’s no Apple store here by the way its jailbroken with 3.0 OS

  141. by Admin, on February 23 2010 @ 12:55 AM

Check here for reinstalling 3.0, or, if you have or have access to a Macintosh, build a custom 3.0 ipsw file with pwnage tool and option click the upgrade button in iTunes and restore your phone with it.

Hi, I need help with my 3gs 3.1.2. I tried the above instructions but it still goes in a constant reboot. This is what happened. One morning i work up and i had no service so i called At&t to see what happen, they was telling me to turn me phone on and off, since doing that every time i turn it back on i had to rerun blackra1n again. I did that for couple of times then he told me it might be 3g problem. so he told me to reset my network settings and my phone rebooted. I tried to rerun blackra1n again but after that it just went into a constant reboot. I tried everything.. since my cydia doesnt not have a back up ssh for 3.1.2 i dont know what to do. Error 28 is a bad sync cable or your Dock Connector on your phone is dirty, clean with a Q-tip and try again.

Are you on a mac or pc?

  150. by Admin, on March 18 2010 @ 12:42 PM

Never restore from a backup. Just setup as a new phone and resync your data.

  151. by Admin, on March 18 2010 @ 12:45 PM

    Try this http://iphonedownlow.com/?p=86

  152. by Admin, on March 18 2010 @ 12:48 PM

Create a custom ipsw file with pwnage tool and restore your phone with it using the iTunes.

I am using a window pc. I also try making a custim ipsw file… but i keep getting itune error 1604

I cannot SSH into my phone either because my phone is stuck on recovery mode…

  155. by Admin, on March 18 2010 @ 5:08 PM

You need to restore w 3.1.3 then jailbreak by carefully following this guide:http://www.redmondpie.com/sn0wbreeze-3.1.3-jailbreak-iphone-3g-3gs-3.1.3/

Not that I’m aware of, sorry.

  159. by David, on March 19 2010 @ 1:45 AM

The iREB to fix the 16xx errors only works for 3g and under right? i have a 3gs, does it work for 3gs too?

  160. by ck, on March 19 2010 @ 3:54 AM

I have the same exact problem as David. Did everything I found in every forums to no avail. Arrgghh.. Someone.. please help! :( (

  161. by Admin, on March 19 2010 @ 4:03 AM

I thought a 3GS update for iReb was imminent months ago, look like its not. Can any of the AT&T customers on here having this problem restore to the original, unmodded 3.1.3?

  162. by David, on March 19 2010 @ 4:33 AM

I am a at&t user, I know i can upgrade to 3.1.3 unmodded because my it happen to my other 3gs. So i have no problem restoring it to the original unmodded 3.1.3. I am stuck in recovery mode right now and afraid if i restore I wont be able to jailbreak the phone any more. My 3gs is 3.1.2 untethered jailbreak, is that consider the old bootrom so i can follow this guide? http://www.redmondpie.com/sn0wbreeze-3.1.3-jailbreak-iphone-3g-3gs-3.1.3/ thank you for helping me through this.

  163. by Admin, on March 19 2010 @ 5:30 AM

I haven’t tried it personally, but you should be able to follow that guide.

  164. by David, on March 19 2010 @ 5:43 AM

quick question, since my phone is completely stuck on recovery mode 3.1.2 and theres no way to get back to my springboard, should i click restore and update to 3.1.3 and back up from my lastest backup? Then follow that guide?

  165. by Admin, on March 19 2010 @ 5:55 AM

Sorry for the all caps, but….DEFINITELY UPDATE TO 3.1.3 FIRST IN ITUNES before jailbreaking!! Personally, I would upgrade to 3.1.3, then jailbreak with sn0wbreeze, then, if all goes well, set up the phone as a new phone instead of restoring from a backup and re-sync with iTunes to get your data back on the device. Restoring from old backups after jailbreak has caused problems for me in the past, but the guide says this is fine to do, so its your decision.

Also, be sure to click “No” when asked“Do you want to activate your iPhone?” Since you are an AT&T customer.

    Best of Luck!

Is the jailbreak for 3.1.3 with snowbreeze working?

David.. in case you do this, can you please post if it worked for you? Thanks! :)

  167. by ck, on March 19 2010 @ 6:52 AM

I am not an AT&T customer so I can’t afford to upgrade to 3.1.3 and do the jailbreak for now since there isn’t any assurance that it will work :( ( Otherwise, i’ll be stuck with an iphone that can’t be used as a phone :( (

  168. by Admin, on March 19 2010 @ 12:45 PM

The 3.1.3 unlock has not been created yet. You can try posting on the Forums at http://www.theiphoneblog.com and see if they have any other suggestions.

  169. by David, on March 19 2010 @ 1:34 PM

i will do this after my class and post to tell you the details. and admin you can jailbreak for 3gs 3.1.3 but not unlock it yet right?

  170. by Admin, on March 19 2010 @ 4:00 PM

    Correct.

  171. by David, on March 20 2010 @ 3:13 AM

well guys… I follow the guide carefully and when i restore with the snowbreeze ipsw i still get the 1604 error.. so now im stuck with 3.1.3 and 05.12.01 baseband :( im so sad… i guess i just gotta wait for the new JB to come out.. and Admin you got any more few trys i can do to JB it?

  172. by Admin, on March 20 2010 @ 2:59 PM

Try this direct from Apple on how to fix 160x errors:
    1. Proceed with custom ipsw restore in iTunes until you get to the “unkwown error 1604″ hit okay then, with iPhone still plugged in x out of iTunes closing it off.
    2. Relaunch iTunes and while the phone is still attached and click okay if prompted.
    3. iPhone should then be able to finish where it left off.

  173. by Admin, on March 20 2010 @ 3:05 PM

    Try this link: http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/09/recover-iphone-3gs-from-apple-logo-or-recovery-mode-loop/

  174. by Admin, on March 20 2010 @ 3:08 PM

    Found this online:

Well, I think I might have a method to downgrade Iphone 3GS with 3.1.3 Baseband 05.12.01 to 3.1.2 without any SHSH backup. But the baseband will still be 05.12.01, therfore unlockable. But you can actually jailbreak it. I have tried it on my Iphone 3gs 16gb Baseband: 05.12.01, version 3.1.3…and I suceeded…maybe it was poor luck, therefore I would appreciate, if someone could test it…so that more people can profit from it.

    1. Download Iphone 3GS original 3.1.2 ipsw file (search in google)
    2. Go to Itunes and make shift+restore…and choose the 3.1.2 file
    3. Itunes will now give after dowgrading the error message 1015
    4. Your iphone will be now in the recovery mode loop
    5. Use IRecovery mode (google it: use the tutorial from ihackintosh) -> I did not work for me on Windows 7 64bit, but worked flawlessly on Windows XP 32bit
    6. After you come out of the Recovery mode, boot your iphone again and Iphone will ask you to make an Activation (but don’t do anything)
    7. Turn off your iphone, download redsn0w 0.94 and jailbreak your iphone with the previously downloaded 3.1.2 ipsw file.
    8. After that your iphone 3gs should have 3.1.2 (jailbreaked) and baseband 05.12.01
    9. Finished^^

Hope this helps and pls let me know if it works for you aswell…

I Installed the lib32 but and open the iRecovery terminal but when i open it it just appear the black box and close right away. How did you do this? I was using my window xp computer.

  176. by David, on March 20 2010 @ 6:06 PM

I also tried in window 7 64bit by following this guide http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-fix-the-problem-of-iphone-3gs-being-stuck-on-apple-logo-screen-or-in-recovery-mode/ But once i typed in irecovery -s it said no ipod/iphone found. How did you get your device to be found. My itunes detects my iphone… but not this irecovery thing.

  177. by Admin, on March 20 2010 @ 6:22 PM

Put it in DFU mode with your iPhone connected to your computer, then open iTunes and wait for your iphone to appear (just to make sure its connected). Then close itunes.

  178. by Admin, on March 20 2010 @ 6:32 PM

If that doesn’t work, try restarting the phone once you get to the iPhone/iPod not found step.

  179. by David, on March 21 2010 @ 1:06 AM

so i got irecovery to work and did as it said. but my phone never restored back to 3.1.2… when i shift restore using original 3.1.2 ipsw i get an error that say something about i can’t use this firmware any more so i didnt get the 1015 error or ne kind. i guess he was really lucky.. did anyone else tried this solution?

  180. by Admin, on March 21 2010 @ 3:02 AM

Must have gotten real lucky, have you tried using Redsn0w, it jailbreaks without using iTunes, its tricky, so read the guide carefully–esp Step 2.

  181. by mercy, on March 21 2010 @ 5:13 AM

hi i have a iphone 3Gs and i recently had it jailbroken and the persone who did this for me said i could not turn the phone off because the jailbraking software will erase and it will ask me to restore it using itunes. Is this completely true. I can not turn it off ever….?

  182. by David, on March 21 2010 @ 6:44 AM

yes i did, i went to the guide website that you found online and read all of the 15 pages of comment and only 3 people said it work and never responded how they made it work. So im assuming they just lied. It does work for 3g users.. but i dont think for 3gs.. I tried it with redsn0w and follow the instruction carefully but after redsn0w is done jailbreaking.. it just become a black screen and i have to do a new restore back up in order to get into my spring board.. I heard that Dev team already came out with a solution for 3.1.3 jailbreak and unlock but do not want to release until 4.0 firmware comes out. if they release it now all their hard work will become a waste since apple will patch it up in 4.0 firmware. I believe that apple is going to release 40 when the new iPad is coming out since they want iPhone and iPad to be compatible with each other. so i guess it should becoming out soon? i hope so… i miss my jail break phone.. but yea.. if anyone has a soluiton please let me know.. thank you

  183. by David, on March 24 2010 @ 1:18 PM

if you turn it off or the battery dies, once you turn it back on you can just rerun blackra1n and it will bring you back to your spring board. you can get blackra1n at blackra1n.com/

My friend jail breaked his iphone 2g using blackrain, Then He says he installed something from cydia, now it reboots and sits at the apple screen, then reboots. I am able to get it into dfu mode, but..neither my mac or pc sees the iphone so I can’t restore it. I know it’s not a bad cable because my iphone 3g works fine. (and I have 3 other usb cables) Tried 2 different windows pc and my imac and the iphone 2g won’t connect to any system.
Other thing to note, sometimes when the phone is restarting, the screen just flashes as if the lcd is bleeding. Any thoughts? I’m not an expert, but I have jailbreaked a few iphones and I really have no clue what else to do? Seems to me like the boot files or boot partition (if there is such a thing on the phone) is corrupted. Or maybe he loaded wrong firmware?? Lastly, sometimes when the phone reboots, the wait symbol (on a windows pc it would be an hour glass) shows up as if it’s about to startup, then reboots. Sorry for the long post, just hoping something in here makes sense to someone.

try holding the power and the home button for 10 secs then left go of the power but still holding the home button until itunes detects it. this happen to my itouch before and i kept doing that and itunes eventually detects it.

My phone will not get out of the apple logo/spinning wheel screen no matter how many buttom combinations I try. I tunes will not recognize the phone, and I am unable to get it into dfu mode. It just continues to go back to the apple logo/spinning wheel screen. Occasionally the phone vibrates twice, but that is it. I got the phone like this from a friend, so I am truly starting from scratch. Any help on just getting into recovery mode?

ive 3GS with firmware 3.12 and my iphone got hanged after jailbreak with blackra1n…screen got hanged and then phone get restarted after 4 to 5 min.

i read all instructions for restore it, but when itunes shows restore option and i click it, then it also saying that i will update the newest firmware in iphone and newesr firmwaer is 3.13. My prob is i dont want 3.13 coz its jailbreak is not available. I need to restore my 3.12 OS. Plz help me…does restoring update my firmware to 3.13?? or it will still the same 3.12???

  188. by Dave, on April 5 2010 @ 1:58 AM

There is a much much easier way to fix this.

I downloaded 3.1.2 and used redsn0w and got locked in the apple screen reset loop from hell.

So I run redsn0w again and simply selected the old 2.3 firmware.

    Afterwards every back to normal.

    :)

im having the same problem as aatii…using itunes to restore to factory settings will update the firmware and there isnt a jailbreak out for 3.1.3 yet…or i might be wrong..but is there away around this????

  190. by Admin, on April 6 2010 @ 1:24 AM

Apparently a jailbreak is coming very soon for 3.1.3.

For now, check the comments for a possible solution– like this one: “if you turn it off or the battery dies, once you turn it back on you can just rerun blackra1n and it will bring you back to your spring board. you can get blackra1n at blackra1n.com/”

i’ve already jailbroken my iphone 3gs with firmware 3.1.2 for almost a year!suddenly when it reboots it goes again into recovery mode!no matter how many times i am trying to jailbreak it again it does the same!does anyone knows how can i fix this?ofcourse i’ve installed all the 3rd party apps from rock and cyndia like all the othrers!is there any solutions,or not yet?

  195. by Admin, on April 14 2010 @ 5:16 PM

Try this: turn it off, then restart, once you turn it back on you can just rerun blackra1n and it will bring you back to your spring board. you can get blackra1n at blackra1n.com/

  196. by anas21Raras, on April 15 2010 @ 8:26 AM

That’s the point! When it brings me back to the springboard i can’t do anything at all!It suddenly and immediately goes back into safety mode!i’ve tried the ”dead battery” solution as well…nothing!i’ve used blackra1n over 200 times since yesterday and it seems i have to try something different.in a discussion i had a few hours ago a friend of mine told me that he was facing problems with ‘the activator’.but even if this is why my iphone has stuck i can’t do anything to uninstall some apps, because the moment my phone reboots completely i cannot use it,because it does that loading thing and dies again!

  214. by Admin, on May 9 2010 @ 8:14 PM

As of right now, i’m pretty sure if your SHSH blobs are not already saved on Cydia your only option is to restore to 3.1.3 and wait for a new unlock to come out.

  215. by Fletcher, on May 10 2010 @ 1:09 AM

Thanks again for your help… one more question before i go ahead and update to 3.1.3

How do I know if my shsh blobs are saved or not on Cydia? I mean did I have to do it manually? I was constantly updating Cydia’s Important updates.

If that wasn’t the way to do it… how do I save them when updated to 3.1.3 so that i can be ready if another update comes out…

once again! Thanks a lot for your help…

  216. by Admin, on May 10 2010 @ 1:30 AM

Here’s an article explaining the SHSH blobs and how they work: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2010/05/07/how-to-backup-and-save-shsh-blob-ecid-hash-of-iphone-ipod-touch-or-ipad-autoshsh-grabber-and-firmware-umbrella/

I saved mine in Cydia, at the top of the Home Screen there’s a link that says “Make My Life Easier”–I followed that, so it wasn’t an automatic process for me. Rock.app also has a link on the very top of its Home Screen that does the same thing.

as I have not upgrade my 3.1.2 , I think it worked … cause i got the message:

Done! If 3.1.3 is still being signed by Apple, then your SHSH blobs should be located in your save location (Shorty) + Saved on Cydia.
You should now be able to always restore to 3.1.3/3.2
Special Thanks to semaphore for umbrella

Hi, i downloaded the .ipsw file 3.1.3 and snowbreeze – it created a modified file for my 2G. When i try to restore it says error 1602-1604. So i restored with the unlocked 3.1.3.
My phone is stuck on emergency calls. I tried spirit with iTunes 9.1.1 and it says i require iTunes 9.

    Summary:
    1.I’m stuck on emergency calls
    2. Snowbreeze is not working for me
    3. Spirit did not work for me.
    4. I have windows XP.

    Please assist

    Hi,

Will I loose my save games when I jailbreak my phone? I’ve been playing a couple of sim games and I don’t want to start from the very beginning after playing for a couple of months now…. :(

No, you will keep your high scores and other data unless something goes wrong and you have to restore the phone.

After spirit jailbreak I got stuck on apple logo and couldn’t restore. Not even on a different computer. I still had warranty and took if to apple. Since they couldn’t get it to restore I got a new 3gs. I want to try to jailbreak this one. What are the chances of it happening again? I know the smart thing would be to not do it again but I still want to try…

  234. by Fletcher, on May 14 2010 @ 1:21 PM

Rummin I just jailbreak my 3gs with spiritjb at spiritjb.com and worked good, you need to be sure your itunes is updated to the latest version…

Great, very helpful. My iphone was caught in an eternal loop -> it would only restart and show the pineapple logo all the time. Usual combination to set it in recovery mode didn’t work. Started sweating and cursing already… Thanks to your solution, I could get the iphone into recovery mode and could restore it subsequently. :-)

Problem was caused by using the Spirit jailbreak (used it on already jailbroken iphone with OS 3.1.2; thought it was necessary for the update to 3.1.3; the only good it did to me was to ruin some nerves…). For the 3.1.3 update I then used pwnage 3.1.5.

    Good work?

Hello Admin friend… I noticed that SHSH Cydia are working again… I explained before that I was able to save the SHSH blobs on my laptop and on Cydia following the procedure you suggested me.

However; my Cydia it says at the top that this iPHONE has SHSH blobs save for 3.1.3 :S

Moamen, no unlock available for 5.12.01 yet. If you have you shsh blobs saved in Cydia you can downgrade to 3.1.2 and get your unlock back!

Admin, i am unclear about this factory restore. i have a jailbroken phone with unlock at 3.1.2 firmware. however like many other people, it keeps loading to the apple icon and would restart 1-2 minutes after. i am wondering if i can do a factory restore and not have to update it to 3.1.3 firmware. because i am afraid that the iphone will lose it’s ability to unlock. by doing what you stated above, will it update to 3.1.3? will i still be able to get it to jailbreak and have it unlocked even though there are no backups of any kind for the iphone because i formatted the computer. please let me know,

  247. by Admin, on May 25 2010 @ 1:04 AM

Brian85, you WILL LOSE YOUR UNLOCK if you restore to 3.1.3, there is currently no unlock available for 3.1.3, and only Spirit can jailbreak 3.1.3. Restoring 3.1.2 is ONLY possible if you have saved your shsh blobs on Cydia’s servers. See this link on how to restore 3.1.2 if your shsh blobs are saved.

Dudes I spend the whole weekend trying to figure it out and finally I was able to use my jailbroken phone again. After I restore it back and got into version 3.1.3 everytime i tried to jailbrake it the whole thing stoped at the apple logo. Well all i did was jailbrake it with version 3.1.2 (With RedSn0W) and BINGO the phone finally came back. I’m now downloading all my themes and ringtones and cydia apps again. It’s a pain in the butthole but hey at least its back to its old self again.

    Good luck!

I have all the problems above with the apple logo stuck on my phone. I had found on other websites the turn off and holding the buttons thing. I finally got it to go to the icon and plug in cord emblem….but I did not follow thru because I will cause my phone to be un-broken if I restore….at least I think I will. I’m assuming that it will automatically restore to the newest firmware. BTW I have a 3gs 32gb iphone that I just received yesterday and now wish that I could throw it on the floor and stomp on it! :o ) It worked somewhat when I first turned it on. I could use the wifi. When I put my T-Mob sim card it it did not recognize. After trying basic things to get it to work. We called a T-Mob guy that we have worked with in the past. He advised us to rejailbreak it with Blackra1n. So we stupidly did. We did this thru the phone itself since it had cydia on it already. Now we have a totally unusable phone. I’m at a loss as to what to do. We never used the phone so I have no back up of anything to restore it to. I’m rambling now….I have read so many websites and blogs that my mind is scrambled. Your website is the first one that seems user friendly and very helpful. Any advice you have would be very appreciated.

    Hi,

I have an iPhone that was originally jailbroken with yellowsn0w @ 3.0. Recently my brother upgraded-by mistake to 3.1.3 on itunes. I then jailbroke it with the latest pwnage 3.1.5. It jailbreak alright but when I tried to unlock it with Sn0wbreeze the phone then switched off and it’s been stuck at the pineapple logo during booting. I have tried the method described here but it wont work. Is there a way you can help me out please? Anyone please!

I have a big problem with my Iphone 3GS – New bootrom – 05.11.07 – firmware 3.1.2. Last week, I lost network connection. So I have resetted the network settings as I did before.

As my Phone is unlocked & jailbroken, the Phone was in recovery mode after restart (as usual). After jailbreaking with blackra1n to resart, the Phone stayed into the recovery mode & is now in a recovery loop.

When I choose to recover in Itunes, the only option is version 3.1.3. If I choose to restore to this version, I won’t be able to unlock as I use the new bootrom. So I didn’t.

Restoring 3.1.2 isn’t possible. Apple gives me a message that they don’t allow to restore to this version. And as I don’t have a backup of my SHSH blobs, I can’t restore…

What can I do to fix this problem? Waiting until there is an unlock for my Iphone? But what when Apple releases the 4.0 OS? Will Itunes accept to restore to 3.1.3…?

    Thanks in advance

what i did when my ipod touch went into reboot mode i used blackra1n and so i went back to blackra1n and then i jailbroke it again without restoring it and it worked. i am telling u guys this because u do not have to loose all your stuff by restoring if u have 3.1.2 just go back to blackra1n were u jailbroke it in the first place and do it again then it will show all the stuff u had before and u wont have to go through all that crap with having to restore.

hi, i understand most of what is being said. I have basically the same problem as everyone- 3.1.2 jailbroken 3gs, stuck in apple logo. i’m reasonably sure i have the SHSH blobs saved for 3.1.2, tried the above suggestion and have a .shsh file saved but am unsure of what to do now. can i do anything with windows or do i have to use a mac? do i restore using this file somehow then rejailbreak, or will this file somehow magically restore my phone completely? or do i restore using itunes to 3.1.3 (or is it too late for that, are we up to 4?) and then somehow bring it back to 3.1.2 using the shsh file? any help very much appreciated

Jailbreak should take no more than 5-6 minutes on a 3G. If you are running on an authorized carrier (AT&T in US) restore your phone in iTunes, then follow instruction on this post.

Was trying to update my iphone to version 4 and it didn’t work. I was just stuck with a task bar and an apple logo. I restarted the computer and tried to plug in my iphone but itunes just wasn’t picking it up. I then found your info and did what you suggested, itunes asked me to restore my iphone which I clicked to say yes but it is taking ages to restore? How long should it take? I don’t need to ‘jailbreak’ my phone as I didn’t unlock it – I am with O2. Just wanted to check how long it takes to restore? Hours/days?

Joanne, If you have an iPhone 3G, it could take up to 4 hours, possibly longer.

    Nick,

iTunes error 9 seems to be a tricky one, and very hard to resolve, seems it has to to something with bad communication between iTunes and iPhone. Maybe due to corrupted drivers/USB protocols mainly happens on Windows machines.

I found two or three cases where this issue was resolved ONLY by restoring on Mac. You may try using a different sync cable or pc or both.

Thanks this worked for below machine

    iphone 3gs
    3.1.3
    05.12.01
itunes 9.1.1 windows xp 32 bit.

I had accidently jailbreaked twice and got stuck with reboot hanged at apple logo, but got solved.
How: I re-jailbreaked again but after that iphone was not connecting to itunes 9.1.1.
But removing the usb cable and reconnect it, iphone rebooted with jailbreak screen(pink screen with loading of new jailbreak firmware).
All went fine in 1 min.Jailbreak sucessfully completed

    Cydia was installed.

Unlock for 3.1.3 05.12.01 also worked.
    1.cydia was pre-installed with ultrasn0w .93 version.
    installed ultrasn0w .93 and unlocked.

    No issues with applications.
no issues with my softbank japan activiation.
3G signal no issues.-I can call and also use 3g Internet.
wifi no issues, I can browse and view websites.

Apple has deemed that You can only restore to the current version of the OS (ios4). Restoring to an earlier version can only be done if you have saved you shsh blobs on Sauik’s servers thru Cydia, even then its a tedious process.

The same rule applies to the iPod touch, cannot restore to anything but the current OS. You’ll have to restore to 4.0.1.

    Download firmware here: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone4/061-7435.20100621.tr49t/iPod2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw

Control click the restore icon in iTunes, then browse to the 4.0.1 firmware you just downloaded and restore will begin.

ok now i need to know…i kept my ipod at 3.1.2 is there a good safe jailbreak out there?

  308. by Casaoui, on July 23 2010 @ 5:35 PM

the setuation is this, I have a 3gs updates to 3.1.3 and 05.12.01 base-band, and I can’t activate it, but I used an activation card i roder, and it worked, I getin my menu, now I just have to jailbrak it to get cydia, and with ultrasnow I can downgrade de base-band, so I used spirit, and it was working, but stuk for long time, I know with spirit it takes max 2 min. but this was for 15 min, so I reseted the Iphone and from then it stuck on the apple logo, also tried to put the original firmware on it, and put in in recory mode, and ons in DFU mode but I get error, that the software is the wrong one.

can some one please help me here?\\

    thanx a lot
